[Buildroot] upgrading kernel version of existing working kernel source

Hello,

i dont if this is the right place to ask, but since there are many
experts here, so you can guide me to right direction.

i am using a custom ARM11 based board and vendor provided with a
working kernel source, but the kernel is 2.6.32.
and the vendor does not give any support now.
now i want to upgrade the kernel to latest version.
how can i do it?
i can use the board specific code from the existing source?
